Quad Simmons

Terry put together a small quiver of Simmons inspired quads. Jeff Quam is tesing the 8-6 at Rincon.

  1. I packed the 8'-6" Simmons Spoon, Terry made for me down to Playa Carmen's, on the Nycoya in Costa Rica...early April. Carmen's is a broad faced beach break, with plenty of room to maneuver, and time to stretch out turns for speed. Conditions on this trip were everything from head high to double overhead, peaking at 3 or 4 foot overhead walls. Peeling in the mornings, and later makeable sections when the wind kicked in.

The Simmons was the first quad I'd ever ridden, and the first wide tail since my twin fins in the early 70's. Before I left on my trip Jeff called to suggest that unlike my usual style of riding mid-board, or on the nose .....ride it back on the tail. WOW. Even though in my mind I knew what flat rocker, parallel rails, and the flat wide tail should do, I still was not prepared for the speed it generated. Neither did any of my buddies who may have taken off a couple of sections ahead of me when I caught up. The acceleration is continuous....it doesn't seem to reach a top end speed. With the quads and wide tail combo, the bottom turning and rail control was very different for me to adjust to, but it was really fun to change up my usual timing. When I was patient and didn't force the bottom turn, it came around very fast through pretty steep conditions, and could draw a very long bottom turn to beat sections. But in the beginning I kept trying to jam turns, and would catch rails. But I adjusted. This board is so much fun in the way it performs, and the way it challenges what you assumed always makes a board turn smooth and go fast. The whole idea of tracking with the Simmons legacy, and experiencing Terry's interpretation into today is just mind blowing. But from the point of view of just riding new surfboard, this is a whole lot of fun ....and looks like it's just going to get more fun each time. Thanks Terry. The Simmons is a terrific experience.

  2. Hey Terry,

Just wanted to drop you a line and let you know how much my son LOVES the "rocketfish" you shaped him. It's really pushed his surfing to a higher level. He had a ball with it in Ecuador, and lent it to another kid who kept saying "Man, this isn't a rocketfish, it's a magic fish!"

Thanks for letting him (and me) hang in the shaping room. His friends were all jealous!

    Best,

    David Q

  4. I've got two of these boards. A 7'6" and a 6"0". These boards are awesome at any length. The speed is phenominal.
